“Say Cheese!” Luna shouted, holding my phone to take the photo. I glanced at Colt from behind the wooden prop stand we were currently posing at. We were Mr. and Mrs. Strawberry, dancing in a bowl of shortcake and cream because, apparently, it was lost on the Strawberries they were about to be eaten.

“Daddy, smile!”

“I am?” Colt said with a laugh as Luna told him he was grimacing.

“I’ll get him.” I leaned over, tickling his side where I knew he would recoil. He immediately began laughing, pulling his face out of his hole as he tried to avoid my on-coming hand once more.

“No, back in the holes!” Poppy commanded, pointing a finger at us and our antics. They might’ve been acting angry at our inability to take a simple photo, but the smiles on their faces told me they were happy. Just as happy as I was.

Colt did as commanded and turned back toward his hole, only to continue over to my side. He reached out, grabbing my hand, and tugging me toward him before planting a sly kiss on my lips. My fingers slid along the soft hairs along his jaw as I kissed him back, and then, over his shoulder, I spotted Poppy standing there looking pleased as punch. I pulled back quickly, clearing my throat before pointing to his hole.

“Picture,” I commanded, ignoring the heat rising in my cheeks. That was careless of us. It was all too complicated to get their little hopes up, and there was no good way to explain to children we were just trying this out. Even if it felt as amazing as it did.

“Got it!” Luna announced, and Poppy ran off, hurrying to her sister’s side. They whispered, Luna’s eyes jumping from me to Colt, and then they both grinned, pleased.

He wrapped an arm around my shoulder as we both stepped off the shaky step someone had constructed behind the stand, leaning to kiss the top of my head. “C’mon, let’s finish getting our strawberries and let them play.”

Walking into the barn, my eyes scanned all the kids running around in the massive hayloft playground. Poppy was at the top of a slide, preparing to go down, and Luna was finishing her turn. Satisfied with this knowledge, I turned back to Colt.

“I need to talk to you about this big job I was offered, but it would take me to the city more days than not, and I’m not sure I want to make such a big move. But—it would definitely be the kind of client that would kickstart the business.”

Colt led me away from the main landing, where most of the kids were rushing past us through the straw. “That’s what you want, isn’t it? A business of your own to give you a sustainable income?” Colt’s thumb absently rubbed the back of my hand as he shrugged his shoulder, “I’m sure we could figure it out. What’s the offer?”

“This local influencer is getting married and wants me to do the wedding in exchange for shout-outs on her social media and in any media write-ups.
